Twelve (12) participants comprised of farmers and agriculture staff from different municipalities have attended the field visit in Alangalang, Leyte, and Carigara, Leyte last August 09, 2019, after the training on Swine Production and Animal Waste Management. This wrapped up the learnings they had gain last June 19 to 21, 2019. Part of the said training was a lecture and demonstration on how to make Bio Gas Digester which will benefit their families and the environment.

Dr. Felicidad Anthea L. Naputo, Sr. Science Research Specialist of DA RFO 8, explained the purpose of bringing the trainees for an onsite visit. “Though the participants had the chance to practice in making it during the training, I thought of giving them the chance to see firsthand an onsite installation.”

The day started with a free bio gas installation in Brgy. Calaasan, Alangalang, Leyte, which was awarded to Dennis Medalla, President of the Calaasan Livestock Raisers Association.

Medalla explained how the bio gas digester will benefit their family. “My morning routine includes cutting pieces of wood that we will use in cooking our food. It requires so much energy before we can enjoy our meal.”

He added that by using bio gas digester in cooking, it provides convenience to their family in saving time and money.

The step by step procedure in installing the digester sustained the attention of the participants. A bayanihan was depicted when all of them lend their hands to help in putting it up.

In the afternoon, the participants were brought to the residence of Mr. Albert Tampus, a former bio gas digester beneficiary of DA 8, in Brgy. Sagkahan, Carigara, Leyte. “We wanted to share to them the bigger picture on how bio gas digester works and its significance,” Dr. Naputo said.

“This actual field exposure complements the three-day training we had. It even gave me the idea on how I can save money for the materials and labor having experienced how to make it first hand,” Cristita Nesus, one of the participants shared.  (JENNINA JUNE LEIRA L.
