Twelve-member delegates from the Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office 8 joined the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP), including more or less 800 participants from other national government agencies, media, academe, local government units, civil society organizations, the military and Philippine National Police actively participated in this morning’s (September 28, 2019) tree planting activity held at Brgy. Camansihay, Tacloban City.

Said activity is a joint initiative of the DILG and KBP under the Oplan Broadcast-treeing Project conducted annually in support of the government’s National Greening Program.

DILG Regional Director Artemio B. Caneja expressed his appreciation for the huge turnout of participants as compared to last year’s similar event. He said that by just looking around, we easily noticed the visible regeneration of plants six years after Region 8 experienced the wrath of Supertyphoon Yolanda.

“Apparently the green environment around us means that plants have already bounced back, but is this true also with our people?” the DILG Chief subtly asked. He also happily shared that among all regions, Region 8 is on top as far as tree planting is concerned.

“Hence, we are very pleased that the number of participants taking part in this laudable initiative of the KBP, DILG and DENR keeps on increasing ,” said Caneja.

Prior to actual tree-planting, Brgy. Chairman Alejandro Reataza, Jr. together with Camansihay Upland Developer-Farmers Association (CUDA) Mr. Adan Esmerez warmly welcomed the volunteers tree-planters from KBP or the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkasters ng Pilipinas led by its Chairman Danilo Requiez and president , and DILG-8 Regional Director Caneja who joined the participants and gamely climbed the sloping terrains just to plant seedlings of mahogany and other forest trees, including bearing trees such as “Pili” courtesy of the Department of Agriculture.

Also providing support during the Tanay activity were contingents from the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police, ABS-CBN-Tacloban, PRTV-12, IBC-6, Kaugop Radio, Magic FM, Bombo Radyo, and the Alpha Phi Omega and Treskellion Fraternities, Department of Justice, Kilusang Pagbabago-Visayas, and the village residents.

It may be recalled that the DILG and the KBP had signed an agreement to undertake the Oplan Broadcast-treeing project in areas of the country most affected by deforestation.
Subsequently, the Department issued a directive encouraging all local chief executives vis-à-vis their roles and responsibilities in the National Greening Program, to engage or enter into partnership with the local chapters of the KBP, together with the DILG field office concerned, for the successful implementation of the KBP project.

Due to convergence initiative as a development strategy that binds all concerned government agencies, the private sector and the local media, the Department of Agriculture has joined the core agencies in staging this annual event by providing fruit-bearing trees as the agency’s counterpart in the implementation of the National Greening Program.  (FRANCISCO C.
