“You are the heroes in the countryside – farmers and fisherfolk,” Department of Agriculture Secretary William D. Dar said during the Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) Saga Partner’s Forum at the Oriental Hotel, Palo, Leyte, on October 25, 2019.

Secretary Dar also recognized the impact of SAAD Program in slowly alleviating poverty in the countryside. He even committed to further strengthen the program and provide additional fund.

In closing, the Secretary emphasized the development of systematic and long-term strategies for agriculture, use of modern technologies, adoption of digitized farming and farm productivity. “Let us be united and pursue with more vigor the interventions of the DA in Eastern Visayas,” Secretary Dar finally quipped.

After his message, Secretary Dar led the ceremonial distribution of cash cards under SURE Aid, a loan program provided by Landbank, for farmers affected by the drop of palay price.

Meanwhile, the event was highlighted with the recognition of five farmer’s organizations which included the Rural Improvement Club of Libas in Northern Samar, Cagbonga Backyard Swine and Duck Breeders Association in Eastern Samar, Jiabong Upland Developers in Samar, Cansoso Livelihood Association of Workers in Leyte and United Farmers Association of Pangi in Southern Leyte. Of these, the Cansoso Livelihood Association of Workers emerged as the top performing group in the region.

For the individual category, Ms Riza Caliba of Hernani, Eastern Samar was awarded as the Outstanding Individual Farmer. Other awardees were Ms Maricel Galit of Northern Samar, Ms Lolita G. Caamud of Samar, Mr. Rolando Lapore of Leyte and Ms Flora Boyoc of Southern Leyte.

SAAD Saga aims to recognize and honor the best practices of SAAD Program farmer-beneficiaries.
