In his short visit to the Philippines, Benoit Bosquet, Regional Director for Sustainable Development, together with nine others from World Bank got to see two of the implemented subprojects of the Philippine Rural Development Project (PRDP) in Eastern Visayas on November 9, 2019. They were accompanied by staffs from the PRDP National Project Coordination Office (NPCO) headed by Deputy Project Director (DPD) Shandy M. Hubilla, Project Support Office (PSO) for Visayas Cluster headed by DPD Engr. Jose Albert Barrogo, and Regional Project Coordination Office 8 (RPCO8) headed by DPD Dr. Jenny Lyn R. Almeria during the tour.

Brgy. Concepcion-Bagumbayan-Hampangan Farm to Market Road in Hilongos, Leyte, a completed I-BUILD subproject; and Leyte Banana Production and Trading Enterprise in Carigara, Leyte, an ongoing I-REAP subproject were those that were visited.

The group jumped off for Hilongos at 6 o’clock in the morning and arrived the destination at 9:00 AM. At the road opening in Brgy. Concepcion, the Local Government Unit headed by Mayor Albert Villahermosa welcomed the guests. As they travelled along the 9.66-kilometer road, they temporarily stopped at the hill side where coco geonets were used at the slope to protect from soil erosion.

“One of the best things about this is that I-BUILD and I-REAP can be seen in one project. These coco geonets were purchased from one of PRDP’s successful enterprise beneficiaries in St. Bernard, Southern Leyte,” Dr. Jenny Lyn R. Almeria shared.

After visiting the road project, Dr. Almeria presented the project brief in a short meeting with the LGU at a bunkhouse nearby the area. Mayor Villahermosa also shared his story from the proposal stage to implementation of the project. He then presented a proposal for a water system project for the said area, which initiated a short discussion and was endorsed to RPCO team for review.

At exactly 11:30 AM, the group left for Carigara, Leyte to meet the Tinaguban Farmers Association (TFA) who happens to be the lead proponent for the Leyte Banana Production and Trading Enterprise.

Adriano Dacurin, a member of TFA, presented the project to the guests and visitors present. An exchange of question and answer also took place during the discussion.

A turnover ceremony also took place during the visit, wherein two trucks (one delivery truck and one stake hauling truck) were handed over to the said association. This was signified through a ribbon cutting.

Mr. Bosquet happily expressed his gratitude. In behalf of the World Bank team present, he thanked the beneficiaries and the RPCO staff for the successful activity.

Among the World Bank guests present were Eli Weiss, PRDP Task Team Leader; Maria Theresa Quinones, PRDP co-Task Team Leader; Madhu Raghunath Sustainable Development/Lead urban Specialist; Dina Umali-Deininger, Practice Manager for Agriculture; Christophe Crepin, Practice Manager for Environment and Natural Resources; Stephen Ling, Lead Environmental Specialist; Agnes Balota, Environmental Specialist; Lesley Cordero Senior Disaster Risk Management Specialist; and Elezor Trinidad, Program Assistant.  (JENNINA JUNE LEIRA L.
