DA, BAFS award Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) to farmer groups in EV

The Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office 8 (DA-RFO 8 ), together with the Bureau of Agriculture and Fishery Standards (BAFS) led the awarding of accreditation and certification to farmer groups who applied for the Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) during a short ceremony held today, January 26 at the DA-8 Conference Room, Kanhuraw Hill, Tacloban City.
 
The One Samar Agro-Organic Practitioners, Inc. (ONE-SAOP) of Gandara, Samar became the first in the region to be accredited as a Participatory Guarantee System – Organic Certification Body (OCB). Their president, Mr. Anastacio S. Cajandab received the Certificate of Accreditation from Engr. Ibrahim Racmat of BAFS and RTD Larry U. Sultan in the said activity.
 
Meanwhile, the Participatory Organic Certificates (POC) were awarded to the five farmer-members (core group) of Catubig Organic Farmers Association (COFA) from Catubig, Northern Samar and the Son of the Living God United Multi-Sectoral Farmers Association (SOULS FA) from La Paz, Leyte. Soon the two groups will undergo the process and inspection to be accredited as an Organic Certifying Body.
 
The Participatory Guarantee System (PGS), in accordance with RA 11511 or An Act Amending the Organic Agriculture Act of 2010, aims to help small organic farmers by providing organic certification with lesser expenses and efficient process. ###
