DA RFO 8 provides rice seeds to affected farmers

The Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office 8 ( DA-RFO 8 ) started to provide assistance to farmers in the region affected by the recent heavy rains and flooding.

On January 26 and 27, 2023, the DA-8, through the Agricultural Program Coordinating Office (APCO) for Eastern Samar, together with the Office of the Provincial Agriculture Services and municipal agriculture offices, distributed seeds to affected rice farmers in Eastern Samar. Under the buffer stock, a total of 600 bags were delivered covering the municipalities of Jipapad (150 bags), Arteche (250 bags) and Taft (200 bags).

The regional office is also scheduled to distribute around 1,900 bags of seeds sourced out from DA – Bicol Region.

As of press time, the damage and losses to agriculture in the region due to severe flooding in the early part of January has reached over P611.1 million. The bulk of the damage was recorded on the rice sector with an estimated production loss of P602.9 million affecting 28,063 farmers and 15,211 hectares. Among the six provinces, Eastern Samar suffered the most damage especially the rice sector which was pegged at P249.7 million to around 10,774.91 hectares of farm area affecting 10,012 farmers.

In the last week of January, DA-8 delivered the initial allocation of 550 bags of rice seeds for the municipality of Dolores. Also, the municipalities of Oras received the partial delivery of 850 bags, while Can-avid with 500 bags. Present during the ceremonial distribution were Vice Governor Maricar Sison-Goteesan, Provincial Agriculturist Dr. Virgilio S. Capon, Mayor Roy C. Ador of Oras, Mayor Vilma A. Germino of Can-avid, and staff of the municipal agriculture offices. ###
